The Somerset Foundation has recently approved a grant for our third graders to receive National Geographic Explorer magazines. Pioneer (grades 2-3 reading level) and Pathfinder (grades 4-6 reading level) versions allow for differentiated instruction and develop nonfiction literacy skills in science and social studies core content. The 3rd Grade team has used National Geographic Explorer in past years as an important component of the reading and writing program. Benefits of working with the magazine include improved ability in reading informational text, expanded vocabulary, and enhanced background knowledge about the world around us. Each issue also provides opportunities for teachers to assess student reading skills through accompanying assessments and skills worksheets. The high interest articles relating to nature, culture, and environmental issues are sure to stimulate our young learners’ brains!
